A short list of first-week permissions
The things nobody told you would feel hardest.
Permission to not fall in love instantly. The bond builds. About 20% of mothers describe a "click" in week one. The other 80% describe it arriving somewhere in the first six months. Both are healthy.
Permission to want help. The "village" is not optional, it was the default for most of human history. Asking is a return to the norm, not a failing.
Permission to send the visitor home. Three rules: hand-washed, not sick, and bringing a meal. Anyone who does not meet all three can wait two weeks.
Try this week
- Make a list of five people who can hold the baby while you nap. Tell them in advance.
- Pre-write a "we are not doing visitors yet" text. Use it without guilt.
- Stock the freezer. Nothing predicts a calm week-one like prepared food.
